Jonathan Picklyk most often can't be bothered. His resistance to playing and recording is – in a very limited sense – legend. Having evacuated his guitar playing of the skill he acquired as a practicing church guitarist and as a student of classical guitar, only a playful way with his fingers remains. It would be a lie to say he explores the guitar. In fact, he has little enthusiasm for either the effort or the physicality of exploration. Where exertion can be limited, it always is. So, why would one listen to the music of this Jonathan Picklyk? I'll give you three reasons.
1) Egoless music is a rare and beautiful commodity. Jon's playing is not going anywhere fast. Somehow, in spite of this, it's never boring – even when he's striving for that effect.
2) Nobody sounds quite like him. Though what he usually does is just play the guitar with some out-of-the-way technique and a stubborn rejection of both talent and memory, he does manage to surprise people with his musical whims. At the interesection of art and nothing, he plies his weird course with only his gut to guide him.
3) Humour. If nothing else, you will find yourself laughing, definitely in spite of yourself, at his ice-cold genius, a genius never within his conscious control but always within his accidental reach.
